Tips to Go Organic (On a Budget)

When most people think about trying to eat organic, they think about the extra expense. They feel like they are going to spend more money on less food. Because of this, they are quick to avoid anything organic. However, it doesn't have to be this way. There are ways to eat organically, without spending a lot of money. You just have to be careful when you are shopping.

Here are some tips to go organic (on a budget).

Start a Garden

One of the cheapest ways to go organic is to start a garden. You can start out small and grow as you gain experience (and find out how great a garden can be!)

Don't have much of a backyard? Don't worry. You can grow herbs and vegetables anywhere. You can put some pots in your sun room or even put some in your windowsill (instead of flowers).

Cut Back on Your Meat

Organic meat is pretty expensive, so you should make the focus of your meals on the vegetables and sides that you are serving. If you don't buy too much meat, your grocery bills shouldn't go up as much as you would think.

Join a Co-op

As more and more people become interested in eating organically, co-ops are starting to form. These work in different ways, so it is important that you understand what is expected of you and what you can get in return.

Some require everyone to work together to build a bigger garden, and you will get a certain percentage of the yields. Some have you grow your own organic vegetables, which you are expected to share with others in exchange for some of their products.

Buy Seasonal

Fresh fruits are cheaper when they are in season. There are two reasons for this. First, they are abundant when they are in season. Also, they are cheaper because they don't need to be shipped in. You should focus all of your shopping on buying fruits that are in season.

Buy in Bulk

If you have the storage room, you can save a lot of money when you buy in bulk. When doing so, focus on buying pasta, dried foods, and vegetables that have a long life. You can also get some deals if you buy meat in bulk, such as a whole animal or even a half. Though this might cost more upfront, you can feed yourself and your family for months on this meat.

Look Outside of the Grocery Stores

Grocery stores often charge more for organic foods, so you might want to check out local farmer's markets. If there aren't any (or at least at this time), you might want to check online. You could find some great deals at these places.

Use Coupons

Though they aren't as plentiful as other coupons, you can find coupons for organic foods online. You might also want to email your favourite organic companies. Many send coupons to their faithful customers.

While most people think that you have to spend a lot more money in order to eat organically, the truth is that you don't have to! As long as you are careful when you go shopping and cut back on the amount of meat that you buy, you should be able to still fill up without spending a lot more. You should stick to seasonal items and use coupons whenever possible. You may also want to look outside of your regular grocery store.
